Show Notes

This short trailer is a breath before the climb, a moment on the roadside to remember why these stories will always matter.  Because it will never, ever be 'just a dog'.

I'm your host, John Littlefair, and welcome to our shared world.

[00:00:01] There's a moment just before sunrise when the world hasn't made up its mind yet. [00:00:07] Light or dark, hope or hurt. [00:00:10] Keep going or stay down. [00:00:14] Six years ago, I stood in that moment myself, packing a motorbike for a solo trip across Australia. [00:00:21] No team, no backing, chasing conversations I wasn't hearing anywhere else. [00:00:29] To talk to strangers about their grief. [00:00:33] The grief of losing a dog. [00:00:37] That ride didn't go the way that I thought. Covid stopped me in my tracks. But here's the truth. I didn't come home empty handed. [00:00:46] Because somewhere on that road, somewhere between the wide open nothing and the old memories that I maybe didn't want to really face, the idea was born. [00:00:57] A place for the stories people didn't know what to do with. [00:01:00] A place where no one pretends they're fine if they're not. [00:01:05] The power wasn't in the motorbike ride. [00:01:08] It was in the stories themselves. [00:01:11] And every episode since has proved it. People have shared their moments they've never said out loud. The final breath in their arms, the small routine they still can't break months or years later. [00:01:23] They're human stories hidden inside dog stories. And that's the whole point of this podcast. [00:01:30] Storytelling is how we make sense of grief. [00:01:34] It's how we honour the dogs who shaped us. It's how we stay connected to them, to each other, to ourselves. [00:01:41] A good story doesn't fix anything, but it reminds you you're not alone. [00:01:48] And sometimes that's the only thing strong enough to keep someone standing. [00:01:54] Year six is about leaning into that. Not rushing past the stories, not sanitising them, not making them smaller to other people's comfort. [00:02:03] It's about sitting with the full weight of someone's truth, letting them tell the way actually felt, letting the pauses matter, letting the laughter matter, letting the parts hurt the most matter. [00:02:16] Because those are the moments people carry for the rest of their lives. [00:02:21] If you're here, you already know how important these stories are. You've lived your own. [00:02:28] You loved a dog who changed you. You lost them. And somewhere inside that story is still unfolding for you. [00:02:35] In memory, in grief, in gratitude, in the ache that never really fades. [00:02:43] This podcast is where those stories belong. Where they're safe, where they're heard, where they're honoured properly. [00:02:52] These stories keep us human because of the dogs who made us better humans. [00:03:00] I'm John Littlefair and welcome to Year six of Never Just A Dog.
